Farmington Front Porch Project

March 2020, our country and life as we knew it changed drastically. COVID-19, also known as the Corona Virus, struck our nation. This deadly virus was upon us causing social distancing, businesses temporarily closing, schools closing for the remainder of the year and forcing families to stay at home.  My small business came to a halt with events having to be rescheduled. As a newborn photographer with Bella Baby Photography, our presence in the hospital also came to a halt.
With all of this free time on my hands I sat and questioned what was I going to do? What would my days be like at home? (Might I also add.....with teenage girls.)  How and what would we do every day until this virus passed and social distancing was lifted.  That is when I stumbled upon a post on Facebook where a photographer in Boston, Massachusetts started the #frontstepsproject.  She visited homes in her area offering complimentary sessions to document this time.
BINGO.....I'm going to do this for my neighborhood!  One by one, families started signing up on our neighborhood's Facebook group page for their complimentary family session.  This past Saturday I had the privilege of photographing almost 20 families!  To see the smiles on their faces as I approached their homes made my heart smile.  I was able to give them something to remember this time by, something they could show their kids in years to come.
The response to these front porch sessions kept growing and this week I have added two more days so I can bring more smiles!

Bedford photographer takes free front porch photos during social distancing

BEDFORD, Va. (WSET) -- Many families in the area are isolated at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, so one Bedford woman decided to bring some joy to them with her gift of photography.
Kim Jennings is a newborn baby photographer at Centra but because she is unable to take pictures at the hospital, she decided to find a creative way to give back to her neighborhood by providing complimentary family photos right on their front porches.
"I just need to do something to feel productive and to be able to give back to this community during this time," said Jennings.
She posted on her neighborhood's Facebook group allowing any family to sign up.
There were 18 families who were able to document their time at home together.
"It's great that she offered this to everyone in the neighborhood," said Kelli Laprade, a Farmington resident. "You can tell the neighbors are having fun, you can tell when she's getting ready to come to each person's house, everyone is outdoors and just making the most of it."
Another resident thinks of this opportunity as a blessing.
"This opportunity is really a blessing just seeing the neighborhood coming together a little bit," said Josh Robertson, a Farmington resident.
Jennings hopes to do this again so families who couldn't join on Saturday could still get their pictures taken.
"Our parents used to say 'we used to walk 3 miles to school in 3 feet of snow uphill, they don't have any proof. But we have proof that we were quarantined in our houses," said Jennings.
